Luxury Investment: Coloured gemstones continue to outperform the wider jewellery market

Whisky continues to lead our Luxury Investment Index with annual growth of 35% in the year to March 2019, followed by art and coins, both recording 12% growth. However, in this edition Andrew Shirley takes a closer look at coloured gemstones. The past decade has seen the record price for an emerald and a ruby surpass that of a colourless diamond on a per carat basis. In April, a 17.43-carat Kashmir sapphire ring fetched £723,063, far exceeding its £300,000 to £400,000 guide price.
